Beginning Optimist is a 2-week class for new or less experienced sailors, ages 7 - 11. The 8 ft Optimist dinghy is an ideal boat for learning. It is a stable boat and is easy to handle on the water.

The class is an introduction to sailing with a structured curriculum that builds student confidence as they advance through each skill level. Following on-land discussion and demonstrations, our experienced instructors will teach students how to rig and launch their boats. Instructors always accompany the sailors on the water in safety boats where they can coach them and ensure their safety. For the first week, sailors work on boat handling skills: learning the “no-go” zone, sailing upwind and downwind, tacking and gybing. As they build confidence, depending on wind conditions, the class gradually moves further from shore where they practice their skills and participate in drills and on-the-water games.

We place 2-3 sailors per boat to make them feel comfortable while learning. You may register your child for both morning and afternoon classes. We avoid repetition of curriculum where possible, and provide supervision during the lunch hour.

Sailors may repeat the course to gain a better understanding of sailing fundamentals, or move on to the Intermediate Optimist sailing class.
